Life. It is semi-happening. (Except that actually I'm sort of boring and don't get out much.)

I'm actually sort of tired right now (and oh, god, this is going to be a busy week, but that's partially my fault for not doing any homework over break).

Um. I saw 9 with at-home friends and enjoyed it muchly (both the friends and the movie), though I thought that the ending could have been better. I saw Where the Wild Things Are with another friend. Went rock climbing (at a gym, with my dad), learned how to belay, didn't do any homework over break...

I wasn't going to do NaNoWriMo this year on account of the fact that I'm now a Busy College Student who doesn't want to fail all of her classes, but my willpower is crap and I haven't been able to keep myself away from the site for more than a day or two at a time. I might (I repeat, might) use this coming November as a motivation to get out some of that alternate universe/religious society/Gnosticism story that's been lurking in my head for a while, but I'm not positive if it's ready to come out of my head just yet. I'm also half-tempted to just do a rewrite of my last year's NaNo, but with better planning; I think that it had potential, and the story itself still wants to be told.

Other stuff? I finally started to put some of my posters (mostly National Geographic tear-outs) on the walls of the dorm. Accomplishment! I started a puzzle back at home that I got from the church book sale. I also got books, and started reading one of them - The Egyptologist, by Arthur Phillips. So far, it's good. Orchestra practice this week was good; I was a little bit nervous about sectionals, but ended up being reminded during them of why I like this stuff so much sometimes. Oh! I aced my Physics midterm last week; I figured that I had at least satted (gotten a high enough score for a satisfactory evaluation) it, but I did even better than expected and came out with a 97.

I've also recently gotten into Buffy, the Vampire Slayer (I know, I know) thanks to the roommates. Also, Kate Beaton's comics. They're funny and historical (but not always) and somewhat silly (but in a good way). And they're well-done, but accessible in the sense that they aren't perfect-looking or drawn digitally. They make me want to write and draw comics!

comments

Things that I should be doing:
- studying for my Physics midterm
- working on my Physics lab
- writing a Psychology paper
- writing and researching a Social Problems paper

What I am doing:
- pondering the possibility of dolphin cheese
- thinking about potential NaNo ideas, even though I don't think that I should participate this year

comments

Hello? A Very General Introduction.

Basics

My name is Emily, and I'm currently 18 years of age. I'm a first-year at a small (public) liberal arts college, which I chose for size, flexibility, and support of intellectual thought. (That sounds so pretentious; I'm sorry. I just like that it's a school where I'll be forced to think and where I'll get a lot of individualized attention.)

I like too many things to count, I think, which is reflected in my current course schedule: Physics, Physics lab, Modern Varieties of Judaism, Russian, Intro to Psychology, and Intro to Social Problems. For a while I wanted to be a published novelist. Then I decided that I wanted to be an astrophysicist, or maybe a medical researcher. Right now, I think that I'd love to be a park ranger. There's no telling how long this plan will last...maybe for a few years, or perhaps only for a few weeks.

For fun, I play the viola. On occasion I go rock- or mountain-climbing, because I have an awesome dad who likes to do those sorts of outdoorsy things. I've also begun recently fencing, which mostly means footwork and learning how to parry at this point.

Other Things That I Like (Even Though I Told You That There Were Too Many Earlier):

<list>Religion - </list>It's not even a specific religion so much as it is the ideas of faith and religious thought. I actually wrote a college essay on this...and it must have been at least half-decent, considering that I was very blessed in the college admissions process.

Reading - Good books, particularly. Things that are well-written, and stories that somehow speak to me or are otherwise worthy of being told. Favorite authors include: Roald Dahl, Madeleine L'Engle, Italo Calvino (although I've only ever read translations), Philip Pullman, James Herriot, and Douglas Adams. Among others.

The Type of Physics That One Learns About When One Reads Books Like The Elegant Universe - Gravity, relativity, quarks, string theory? Awesome.

Systems - This one is a little more difficult to explain, but I like considering things within an overall structure, whether it be mathematical, social, or otherwise.

Kitschy Sci-fi movies. MST3K-type material.

I...I think that I might be done now. I'm not so certain that this is sufficient, but it's all that I've got at the moment.

comments
